When it comes to book publicity, we’ve seen a lot – including issues we consider “red flags” to both immediate, and long term success.

And listen, I know the term “red flags” can sound intense, but hear me out – what I’m talking about are hurdles and roadblocks, or focusing on the wrong things and ignoring key elements. It’s a catch-all term for things I’d love to see authors not get bogged down with!

So we created a quiz based on our podcast Minisode: Red Flags We Look For and You Should Avoid, which highlighted some of the more common book publicity issues we see authors dealing with.

If you haven’t listened, I highly recommend it!

We keep it real, and explain what can make book publicity more challenging than it already is. Honestly, these are lessons we’ve learned through years of experience.

You may be thinking, “Wait, I can’t be a red flag!” or “Can I still be successful if I did some of these things?” and all I can say is, it honestly depends.

There’s no hard and fast rule or perfect equation for success.

However, we will always be super honest with you, and success takes work. It requires educating yourself, and it requires committing to doing it better going forward.

The beauty with book publicity is you get a fresh start with each title you release!

So don’t be afraid to share your score and anything you learned, in the comment section. I assure you you’re in good company because part of learning is making mistakes.

I answered one incorrectly. I wish that meant that I know what I’m doing! I recently decided to refocus and pay attention to the marketing experts so perhaps in a few months I’ll notice a difference in my sales.
