Welcome to our list of December observances and content ideas for your monthly author marketing plan!

I know you’re probably ready to focus on family and all that comes with the holidays, and get a reprieve from book promotion, but honestly one of the best ways to ensure you’re not completely ditching your readers, fans, and potential buyers, is by posting content.

And what better time of year to post about fun and heartwarming topics?

And if you haven’t downloaded our Monthly Book Marketing Planner yet you can grab that here!

Remember, without regular connections to readers, you’re just another book on the shelf (literal or virtual) they have no vested interest in…so take the time to make yourself stand out by using our monthly observances and tips to create interesting content with your own unique twist.

Another great reason to bookmark this author marketing resource? Timely content that uses popular and trending search terms, is a great way to enhance your visibility and improve SEO in a very simple way.

Remember, content ideas don’t always have to stem from your genre or topic.

When it comes to author marketing and building a brand, ensuring fans and followers have ways to connect with you on a more personal level is equally as powerful.

How to Use My Content Ideas

Below are holidays and just plain wacky and fun December Observances in 2018.

I’ve also included a few content ideas and angles to help spark your creativity!

Remember, not all these are worth an entire blog post or article, but nearly all of them can be turned into a fun or thought provoking social media post or blurb in your newsletter – so it’s like getting triple the ideas!

Keep in mind, nearly all your posts should encourage your fans and followers to respond, chime in, share their stories, etc. so don’t forget to work in that angle. I mention it as part of my recommendations occasionally, but please know that encouraging engagement is always the goal – so never post “flat” content, always get creative with how you can pull others into the conversation, and easily.

Getting Started With Monthly Observances

3 National Roof over Your Head Day
4 Santa’s List Day – Keep an eye out for my blog post coming up that covers simple ways for getting off the book promotion naughty list!
5 Repeal Day – The 21st Amendment ends Prohibition. I’ll drink to that!
6 St. Nicholas Day – He was well known for giving to needy people, especially children. So this is a great time to remind those of us who are fortunate enough to help others, to do so this time of year.
6 Mitten Tree Day – This is so bizarre but I kind of love it, and a great way to use those single mittens and gloves that are missing their mate! Decorate a tree or small shrub and share the pics.
7 Letter Writing Day – Such a dying art, who was the last person you wrote a letter to? Who was the last person you received one from?
7 Pearl Harbor Day – Another great opportunity to honor those who have served.
8 National Brownie Day – Because it’s not the holidays without treats! If you have a favorite recipe or local shop, share the love.
9 Christmas Card Day – A reminder to get those in the mail if you haven’t already! Consider doing digital cards for your diehard readers or your mailing list.
9 International Children’s Day – This is a joint initiative between UNICEF and the International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. It’s a day when broadcasters “tune in to kids”.
10 Human Rights Day – On this date in 1948, the UN General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. So they’re celebrating their 70th anniversary! Use the hashtag #StandUp4HumanRights
12 Channukah – If you celebrate share your favorite traditions with friends and family, and if you have small kids consider doing a fun gift guide.
12 National Ding-a-Ling Day – Brace yourself for bizarre and crazy behavior, from all of the people you encounter today. I just couldn’t resist including this! Report anything fitting on Facebook and let the laugh emojis flow!

Time to Get Creative with Your Holiday Author Marketing

12 Poinsettia Day – A sure sign the season is upon us!
14 Roast Chestnuts Day – This is a great tradition that no doubt many of us haven’t participated in in years, or ever. See if you can revive it, and use this as an opportunity to share the traditions you do keep.
15 Bill of Rights Day – Proud to be an American!
16 National Chocolate Covered Anything Day – Okay, share all your faves, remember, include pictures.
18 Bake Cookies Day – This is a great opportunity to share a recipe or two you’re particularly proud of.

20 Go Caroling Day – I love this so much, if you don’t go caroling perhaps it’s a close second to post the audio to your all time favorite Christmas classic. Or share a playlist you’ve created!

21 Winter Solstice – How do you celebrate the shortest day of the year?
23 Festivus – For the rest of us! Festivus came into being as the direct result of a Jerry Seinfeld television show episode aired on December 18, 1997. It’s supposed to be for anyone who doesn’t celebrate one of the mainstream holidays this time of year. If that’s you, share it loud and proud.
23 Roots Day – Returning to our roots is a warm, cozy and comfortable feeling, a sense of belonging, and it’s perfect this time of year. Share some insight into your roots with your fans.
24 National Chocolate Day – I don’t think I really need to help you here.
24 National Egg Nog Day – I love nog, seriously. If you have a favorite recipe please share it in the comments on this post! And then, with your fans of course. I have a friend who makes Alton Brown’s Aged Eggnog and it’s amazing.
25 Christmas Day – Merry Christmas to you and yours!

December Has Almost Wrapped

26 Boxing Day – Boxing Day is celebrated in England, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and other former British commonwealth countries. The roots of the holiday goes back to the Middle Ages. On this day, members of the merchant class would take boxes, fill them with food and fruits, and give them to servants, tradespeople and the less fortunate.
Today, the giving of boxes includes filling boxes with food and clothing for the needy and performing volunteer work. Monetary gifts to charity are also common.
27 Make Cut Out Snowflakes Day – This is an adorable way to keep the kiddos entertained while they’re still out of school, share your creations.
27 National Fruitcake Day – Okay, if you have a recipe you love, share it! Or do a poll to see if your followers love or loathe the holiday staple.
28 Card Playing Day – More down time between the holidays, it’s nice to celebrate some simple activities.
30 Bacon Day – This needs no recommendations I hope. Cheers to bacon.
31 Make Up Your Mind Day – Take this opportunity to share your new year’s resolutions and make them official!
31 New Year’s Eve – Be safe, and many happy returns to you and yours for 2019!
