This is all very nice, but I don’t think there are very many agents out there interested in having to do that much scrambling. They are there strictly for the money. The vast majority of their transactions with authors are one-offs: Wham-bam, you know what I mean. This new independent publishing paradigm we’re all suddenly stuck with is pretty scary, but it forces us to do something agents editors and publishers don’t really know much about or want to do in the first place: connect us with readers. 90% of the time, the mainstream publisher doesn’t do dick for marketing. They are the gate-keepers, they are really not interested in any other functions.
