I’m an author! Now what?Got a question about publishing, we’ve got the answer. Whether you’re published, trying to get published or trying to market your book. If you’ve got a question, we’ve
got the answer!
Why is my book not selling?
Well there are a number
of reasons your book might not be selling but the first and most
obvious one is that perhaps you’re going after the wrong market. Often authors will subscribe to the “spray and pray” theory
meaning that they spray a whole bunch of stuff to the wall and
hope that some of it sticks. A more focused campaign that targets
your audience can save you tons of money, time and frustration.
How do I know who
I’m selling my book to?
Getting to know who your reader is, is the most important part of any campaign. You can identify your reader by getting one of our Reader Profile Worksheets. This will help you to define not only who your reader is but how you get to them. It will also help you unearth where your reader shops, what other books they read as well as any associations they belong to and magazines they read.
How do I get my book into bookstores?
Getting into bookstores
nationally can be a tough battle and jockeying for shelf space
isn’t always the best use of an author’s time. Shelf space is often bought and paid for by big name publishers and getting into stores nationally, even for recognized names, can be a challenge. Ideally if you’re doing a lot of regional promotion your local stores will begin to carry your book because they’re
getting requests due to your regional exposure. The best thing
you can do though is find alternative ways to get to your audience.

How can I find a publisher for my book?
Well these days there are
a number of ways to get published. You could shop your book to
a literary agent or publisher or you could self-publish. In order
to find the right literary agent or publisher for your book you’ll
need to do some research. We recommend Jeff
Herman’s Guide to Book Publishers, Editors and Literary Agents.
Do I need a literary agent?
Not always, you can certainly
shop a publisher without an agent but regardless of whether you
get an agent or not, you’ll need someone to read through your contract and make sure you’re getting a straight deal. If you’re
in search of a publisher that will accept an unagented author,
